2027 elections: NUJ cautions against politics of hatred, demands timely distribution of farm inputs - Blueprint Newspapers Limited

Spread the wordThe Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, Friday, cautioned politicians against hate campaigns, character assassination, and other divisive actions ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that such acts could threaten peace and stability in the country. The Union made the caution in a communique issued at the end of its congress held at the Dr. Sam Egwu Press Centre in Abakaliki. The Union urged political actors to embrace issue-based campaigns and conduct themselves in line with democratic principles. “Congress urged all political actors to play by the rules, engage in issue-based campaigns, and shun campaigns of calumny, character assassination, and other actions capable of heating up the polity,” the communiqué stated. The Union also expressed concerns over the recurring delay in the distribution of government agricultural inputs to farmers, warning that such delays could frustrate efforts aimed at boosting food production and addressing economic hardship across the state. It stated that farm inputs must get to genuine farmers at the appropriate planting period to achieve the desired impact, adding that late distribution had continued to reduce the effectiveness of government agricultural intervention programmes. “Congress urged government to ensure timely distribution when such inputs will be most useful to farmers and to put mechanisms in place to ensure that only genuine farmers benefit,” it stated. On the increasing threat of flooding as the rainy season intensifies, the Union urged residents of flood-prone communities to comply with safety advisories issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and other relevant agencies, warning against activities capable of worsening flood disasters. The body further advised residents to desist from blocking waterways, drainage channels, and other human activities capable of increasing the risk of flood disasters. It commended Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for what it described as “visionary investments” in education and human capital development, particularly the sponsorship of Ebonyi indigenes on local and overseas scholarships up to doctoral level. It urged the governor to remain focused on programmes aimed at improving the welfare and future of Ebonyi people. The Union also appealed to the governor to allocate an alternative parcel of land to the NUJ, following the revocation of allocations at the EBSU Pocket Layout, which affected the three hectares it earlier acquired for its proposed estate project.
