32 evacuated Ghanaians arrive home from South Africa as government begins second phase of evacuation - Adomonline. com

A total of 32 Ghanaian nationals, including children, have arrived at the Accra International Airport under the government’s ongoing evacuation exercise from South Africa amid renewed concerns over xenophobic attacks and violence targeting foreign nationals. The latest group forms part of the second phase of the evacuation programme, which began on Sunday, July 26, to assist Ghanaians who have chosen to return home because of growing security concerns. Government is expected to evacuate about 1,000 more Ghanaians during this phase of the operation. The evacuation follows reports of renewed attacks on foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, prompting efforts by the Ghanaian government to ensure the safety and welfare of its citizens. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the government has introduced a reintegration package to support the returnees as they settle back into the country. According to him, each evacuee will receive GH¢5,500 as a reintegration grant, in addition to travel and transportation support, to facilitate their resettlement. The government says the intervention is aimed at ensuring the safe, dignified and successful reintegration of the returnees into Ghanaian society while evacuation efforts continue for other citizens who have expressed the desire to return home.
