Experienced international founder and CEO shares insights on trust, transparency, and personalization as the new foundations of customer loyalty and long-term business success. After years of seemingly unstoppable growth, the global luxury industry has lost approximately 50 million customers, a shift thatbecamea major topic of discussion at the Financial Times’ Business of Luxury Summit. The sector now faces a growing crisis of trust, forcing companies across hospitality, luxury services, and premium experiences to rethink what truly drives customer loyalty and long-term value. For Nicolas Mendiharat, the industry’s current challenges are not entirely surprising. Having spent more than 30 years building and leading companies across technology, hospitality, elite wine, and investment markets, he built a business valued at over $100 million and brought innovative ventures such as Recommend, Palate Club, and WineChain to market. His entrepreneurial journey offers valuable lessons on how businesses can build lasting customer trust, adapt to changing market expectations, and create value that endures beyond industry trends. “I believe, growth alone is no longer a guarantee of relevance,” says Nicolas. “Long-term value increasingly depends on a company’s ability to build trust and continuously adapt to changing consumer expectations. ”This lesson has shaped one of Nicolas Mendiharat’s earliest successes with TravelHorizon Group, the company behind SkiHorizon. com, which became Europe’s largest online booking platform for ski vacations. At a time when ski travel remained highly fragmented, with travelers forced to arrange accommodations, transportation, equipment, and lift access through separate providers, Mendiharat created one of the first integrated digital platforms, bringing the entire vacation experience into a single booking ecosystem. Under Nicolas’s direction as Founder and CEO, the company became the largest ski vacation booking platform in Europe, reaching more than 300,000 customers, grew to approximately 300 employees across multiple countries, and generated nearly $100 million in annual sales. Years later, Mendiharat applied a similar philosophy to the consumer technology sector through his novel application Recommend. “Trust has always been the foundation of every successful business for me,” shares Nicolas. His concept offered users a unique opportunity to discover products and experiences through recommendations from people they trusted. Mendiharat led product development and team building while raising approximately $3 million in capital. The application attracted more than 100,000 users, became a finalist in both the prestigious LeWeb Startup Competition and the 4YFN Startup Awards, and was featured twice in Apple’s Best New Apps section. Building credibility has also become the foundation of one of Nicolas’s most innovative ventures, WineChain, trusted by some of the world’s most prestigious wine estates. “What fascinated me about the fine wine market was how much value is tied to a bottle’s journey,” Mendiharat explains. “Collectors pay attention not only to the wine itself, but also to where it comes from, who owned it, and how it has been cared for over time. ”Inspired by this challenge, Nicolas co-founded the company and led it as CEO. He developed a new way for collectors and producers to track a bottle’s history, combining blockchain technology with smart contracts to create a secure digital record that followed wines throughout their lifecycle. The idea resonated with investors and industry leaders. The company secured more than $6 million in funding, attracted renowned wine estates including Champagne Louis Roederer, Château de Beaucastel, and Domaine Armand Rousseau, and expanded its reach to 32 countries and 42 U. S. states. Working across such different industries gave Mendiharat a front-row seat to the realities of innovation. The businesses that grew over time understood what their customers needed and built solutions around those needs. This understanding eventually has made Nicolas a trusted voice in the professional community. Mendiharat served as a judge for France’s Net Managers startup competition, a respected forum for entrepreneurs in the travel and digital economy. He also mentored founders through the French American Chamber of Commerce in California, one of the leading business organizations supporting cross-border entrepreneurship between France and the United States. “One piece of advice I often share with founders is to spend less time thinking about how to attract attention and more time understanding the people they want to serve,” Nicolas notes. “When you solve a meaningful problem for customers, growth becomes much easier to sustain. ”However, alongside trust and long-term value, another factor continues to shape customers’ decision-making. “In my view, individualization has become a new form of value,” Nicolas is sure. And this is especially true when it comes to wine. Two people can taste the same bottle and have entirely different reactions, making personal preference one of the most important factors in the purchasing decision. To help people discover wines they would genuinely enjoy, Mendiharat founded Palate Club. Through a series of blind tastings, the platform gathered hundreds of data points about what customers enjoyed and used artificial intelligence to build detailed individual taste profiles. As more tastings were completed, the system refined its understanding of each customer and delivered increasingly personalized recommendations. During Nicolas’s tenure as Founder and CEO, the company grew into one of the wine industry’s most innovative personalization platforms, expanding across 42 U. S. states, reaching more than 1,000 customers, generating approximately 12,000 app downloads, and raising about $1. 5 million in funding. In many ways, the principles that have guided Nicolas Mendiharat’s ventures are the same ones reshaping the luxury sector. The loss of 50 million luxury customers suggests that exclusivity alone is no longer enough to secure long-term loyalty. Businesses that continue to thrive will be those that combine quality with transparency, innovation with relevance, and technology with a genuine understanding of the people they serve.
