The All Democratic Alliance (ADA) has given the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) a48-hour ultimatum to comply with a Federal High Court order directing it to release an access code required for the association’s registration as a political party ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, ADA Protem National Secretary, Aminu Ahmed, alleged that INEC’s continued refusal to comply with the court order had stalled the association’s registration process. Ahmed said ADA was among eight political associations prequalified by INEC for registration as political parties, but could not complete the process without the access code needed to upload its officials’ details, office addresses, membership register and other required documents. He warned that failure by INEC to comply within 48 hours could trigger contempt proceedings against the commission’s chairman, the Director of the Department of Election and Party Monitoring (EPM) and other relevant officials. According to Ahmed, the Federal High Court had ordered INEC to issue the access code within 72 hours of its judgment, with the deadline expiring on August 4. He accused the commission of defying the order for 39 days, describing the alleged non-compliance as a threat to the rule of law and an attempt to frustrate ADA’s registration ahead of the 2027 elections. In the judgment delivered on June 29, Justice Peter Lifu reportedly ruled that INEC’s issuance of the access code to Dr Umar Ardo, whom the court found was not the recognized protem secretary of ADA, was illegal, wrongful, null and void. The court also ordered INEC to reopen its portal for one week to enable the ADA leadership to upload its digital membership register and other documents required for registration. Ahmed said the association expected INEC to comply with the judgment within the new 48-hour deadline or face legal action for contempt.
