Ghanaian songwriter, scriptwriter and film producer Panji Anoff has challenged negative perceptions about Africa, arguing that the continent’s traditional societies contain values that rank among the most advanced in the world. Speaking during a conversation with music executive and YouTuber Richie Mensah, Anoff disagreed with comments attributed to Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates that Africa will never unite. “You know, recently Bill Gates said, ‘Africa will never unite. ’ What a stupid man,” Anoff said. He argued that African societies have developed systems and values that are often overlooked when compared with Western models. “I think African society is one of the most advanced in the world,” he added. According to Anoff, the continent’s indigenous cultures have historically placed emphasis on community, sharing and collective responsibility. He believes some of these values have been weakened by external influences, particularly the way religion has shaped African societies. “I feel that we have allowed religion to distort our indigenous culture,” he said. Anoff also highlighted the role of money in modern relationships, arguing that financial gestures have become a common way people express affection. “Money is the cheapest way of showing love,” he said. He explained that people’s identities are shaped more by repeated actions than occasional displays. “We are not what we do once in a while. We are our habits,” he said. The songwriter advised people seeking personal change to focus on their daily behaviours. “So if you want to change anything in your life, just change your habits,” he said.
