Africa's Rechest Man, Aliko Dangote Set to Donate One-Third of His $35. 1bn Fortune to Charity

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, is preparing to leave a lasting impact beyond business by donating one-third of his fortune to charitable causes, according to his daughter, Halima Dangote. Speaking during an interview with Bloomberg, Halima, who is a trustee of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, disclosed that the billionaire businessman has already secured the support of his family for the decision, which forms part of his succession plan. With Dangote's wealth currently estimated at $35. 1 billion by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the planned donation is valued at approximately $11. 7 billion, making it one of the largest philanthropic commitments in Africa. Halima explained that giving back has always been a core part of her father's vision. She revealed that he had already transferred 25 per cent of his assets to the Aliko Dangote Foundation, with the remaining arrangement structured in line with Islamic inheritance principles. "He put all the structures in place to ensure our focus remains on health and education. He actually donated 25 per cent to the foundation. If you look at it, under the Sharia Code in Islam, it means he has donated 33 per cent of his entire inheritance to the foundation," she said. She noted that the billionaire's goal is to ensure the foundation continues making a difference for generations to come. "That is how important it is to him because philanthropy needs to exist from one generation to another," she added. According to Halima, Dangote personally requested that his daughters and his mother sign the will to formally approve the decision. "He asked myself, my two sisters and his mother to sign under that will, confirming that he is able to dedicate that 33 per cent to humanity," she said.
