Akmenė Delegation Discusses Cooperation in Estonia - EUROPE SAYS

An official delegation from Akmenė District Municipality in Lithuania visited Viru-Nigula Municipality in Estonia, where representatives took part in Kunda Sea and Family Day events and discussed further cooperation with partners from several countries. The Akmenė delegation included Council member Saulius Momkauskas, mayoral assistant Dovilė Liaukšienė, and Jolanta Šiurkuvienė, a media relations specialist from the municipality administration’s International Cooperation and Communication Department. The Lithuanian representatives were received by Viru-Nigula Mayor Einar Vallbaum. Together with guests from Latvia, Finland and Moldova, they attended local events, visited a mining museum and took a motorboat trip across a former stone quarry that is now filled with water. Representatives from Lithuania, Latvia, Finland, Estonia and Moldova also discussed possible next steps for cooperation between municipalities. Akmenė District Municipality already runs joint tourism projects with partners from Dobele in Latvia and actively exchanges experience in education with Estonian partners. For international readers, Akmenė District Municipality is a local government area in Lithuania, while Viru-Nigula is a municipality in Estonia. Cooperation between such municipalities often focuses on practical areas such as tourism promotion, public services, community events and education. Moldova’s participation also added an EU-related dimension to the meeting. Moldova has sought membership of the European Union and has been an official EU candidate country since 2022. Accession negotiations began in 2023. Whether Moldova becomes an EU member will depend on how successfully it carries out the required reforms and completes the negotiations, making experience from EU countries useful for Moldovan partners. Akmenė District Municipality and Estonia’s Viru-Nigula Municipality began official correspondence in 2018. On 15 August 2019, the two municipalities signed a protocol of intent on partnership cooperation in Naujoji Akmenė, Lithuania. Information about the visit was provided by the International Cooperation and Communication Department of Akmenė District Municipality.
