Andhra CM calls for technology-driven, future-ready policing

Last Updated:July 23, 2026, 22:30 ISTRepresentational image (Image: News18)Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh), Jul 23 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday called for restructuring the police system to meet emerging challenges, stressing the need for technology-driven, future-ready policing. “We must examine the extent to which the police system needs to be restructured to suit changing times. Priority should be given to the concept of ‘Invisible Police, Visible Policing’," Naidu said while addressing the Andhra Pradesh Police Retreat 2026-Future Policing Conference. Recommended StoriesSenior police officers deliberated, as part of the programme, over the past two days on challenges likely to confront policing in the future and strategies to address them. IPS officers from across the state participated in the conference, which focused on technology-driven policing, prevention of crimes against women, tackling cybercrime and other future policing challenges. He alleged that some people were using social media platforms to incite unrest and said ensuring punishment for offenders, along with preventing crimes, would help bring crime under control. The chief minister said police should not only prepare plans to maintain law and order and curb crime but also ensure effective implementation and measurable outcomes. He said police personnel should remain friendly towards the public while maintaining a strict approach towards criminals. Naidu cited the quick tracing of the idol of Lord Hanuman allegedly abducted from the Tirumala footpath as an example of the effective use of technology in policing. He said the suspect might have been mentally challenged but warned that failure to take appropriate action in such incidents could create misconceptions among the public and bring disrepute to the government. Naidu said the government had brought ganja (marijuana) under control to a large extent but stressed that further efforts were needed as drug abuse was destroying entire families and contributing to crime. He called for greater public awareness on the harmful effects of drugs and directed officials to further strengthen the dog squad and forensic departments. The chief minister said the government had brought rowdyism and factionalism under control and recalled personally visiting incident sites on several occasions to boost the morale of both police personnel and the public.
