Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was demoted by King Charles III last year because of his connection to the late paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein. The former Duke of York now looks set to lose the Freedom of the City of London. The City of London Corporation, which governs the Square Mile, said it is working on a process that could result in the removal of the privilege he was awarded in 2021. A spokesman for the corporation said: “Our thoughts remain with the victims and survivors of Jeffrey Epstein, and with all victims and survivors of sexual abuse and exploitation. “We are developing a process that would allow the Freedom of the City of London to be removed where appropriate, having determined that there is currently no effective lawful mechanism to do so. ”Marsh Farm, at Wolferton (Image: Chris Bishop)In May, the corporation criticised the former prince for failing to voluntarily surrender the honour “despite being asked to do so”. It passed a motion expressing “profound disappointment” that he had not relinquished the freedom of his own accord. Mr Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on his 66th birthday in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office following allegations that he shared sensitive information with Epstein while serving as the UK’s trade envoy. He was living at Wood Farm at Wolferton, on the King’s Sandringham Estate, but has since moved to nearby Marsh Farm, which was renovated before becoming his permanent residence. The Freedom of the City of London is believed to have begun in 1237 and was historically granted to allow individuals to carry out their trade within the city walls. Today, it is seen as an honorary title.
