The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a stern warning to political appointees serving under President Bola Tinubu, declaring that anyone who claims to be a non-partisan “technocrat” while holding a political office must either actively mobilize for the party or resign. Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja, APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda emphasised that the party relies on votes—not purely administrative titles—to retain power, warning that appointees cannot enjoy political privilege while distancing themselves from grassroots politics ahead of the 2027 general elections. The warning came during a courtesy visit by members of the Progressive Local Government Chairmen’s Forum, led by the Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government in Niger State, Dr. Mustafa Jibrin. Addressing the delegation, Yilwatda rejected the common defense used by some officials who claim to be non-politicians, likening the posture to someone denying their own prominent ethnic tribal marks. To enforce political accountability, the national chairman tasked local government chairmen—whom he described as the closest elected officials to the grassroots—to blow the whistle on appointees who are failing politically in their constituencies. Yilwatda noted that regardless of how efficiently an official might perform administrative duties inside an office in Abuja or a state capital, they are considered a liability to the party if they are “politically zero” in their home wards and fail to deliver votes.
