Arizona Confirms First Clade I Mpox Case, Health Officials Say Public Risk Remains Low

The infection was linked to international travel, and state officials say there is currently no evidence the virus is spreading locally. Arizona has recorded its first known case of Clade I mpox, bringing a less commonly detected form of the virus into the state’s public health surveillance efforts. The Arizona Department of Health Services said the resident contracted the infection while traveling outside the United States. Health officials are following up with people who may have been exposed, but have found no indication of local transmission connected to the case. The department continues to monitor infectious diseases and coordinate response efforts with local health agencies. Arizona has reported 34 mpox cases across Clade I and Clade II this year as of Tuesday. Clade II has circulated in Arizona and elsewhere in the U. S. since 2022, while Clade I has historically been concentrated primarily in parts of Africa. Mpox generally spreads through close contact with an infected person, including contact with lesions, bodily fluids or contaminated personal items. Symptoms can include a painful or itchy rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, headaches and muscle aches. The state’s first Clade I case is notable for disease monitoring, but officials are not describing it as evidence of a broader Arizona outbreak. For residents, the distinction matters: an imported case can trigger contact tracing and heightened surveillance without signaling sustained community spread.
