Ask Dr. Dylan: Why men need to stop ignoring their health

June is Men’s Health Month, and doctors say many men put off medical care until minor health issues turn into major emergencies. Emergency department staff report seeing men who have ignored chest pain, injuries or stress for months or even years until the situation becomes critical. Many try to “tough it out,” but waiting often makes health problems worse. Dr. Dylan Wyatt, Emergency Medicine Physician at Aspirus St. Luke’s, compares regular checkups to routine car maintenance, saying most men take better care of their vehicles than their own bodies. Conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar often have no symptoms until they cause a heart attack or stroke. A yearly blood test and blood pressure check can catch these problems early, and age-specific screenings like colon cancer and prostate exams can save lives. Mental health is another area where men often avoid seeking help. Many have heard messages like “toughen up” or “men don’t cry,” but experts say mental health is about biology, not toughness. Stress, anxiety and depression are just as common in men as in women, but they may show up as anger, irritability, trouble sleeping or increased alcohol use. These issues are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, and talking to a doctor or therapist can help restore balance. Doctors encourage men to make time for themselves and not to feel ashamed about asking for help. Scheduling a routine physical or talking to a professional about stress or health concerns is an important step in taking care of both themselves and their families.
