Astrid Pérez Calls on Regional Voices to Tackle Europe's "Pivotal Moment"

Astrid Pérez Highlights Urgent Challenges for Europe at CALRE Meeting in MadridOn 10 July, Astrid Pérez, President of the Canary Islands Parliament and the Conference of European Regional Legislative Assemblies (CALRE), emphasised the critical state of Europe during the CALRE Permanent Committee meeting in Madrid. She pointed out pressing challenges related to social cohesion, territorial balance, competitiveness, digital transition, and security, urging the need for a strong regional voice to navigate the future. Pérez welcomed new members to the forum and paid tribute to the victims of a recent wildfire in Los Gallardos, Almería. She noted that Europe’s advancement relies not only on major decision-making centres but also on regional input and perspectives. The CALRE meeting aims to promote cooperation among legislative assemblies, share best practices, and progress in various working group areas, including the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) and the centralisation of the European budget. Senate President Pedro Rollán, who opened the session, shared insights into the Senate’s experience with AI and its General Commission for Autonomous Communities, highlighting its unique role in Spanish parliamentary practice. He described how this commission facilitates debate and decision-making closely aligned with community needs. Rollán also emphasised the Senate’s commitment to responsible and effective AI use, having recently become the first Spanish parliament to establish usage guidelines.
