Aznar legacy anchors new era of growth for Cebu shipping firm - THEPHILBIZNEWS

A. Serrano and Andrea B. RamosA maritime legacy spanning generations continues to shape the future of Aznar Shipping Corporation as the Cebu-based company expands its footprint across the Visayas while staying true to its family roots. What started as a modest family venture built on Cebu’s rich seafaring tradition has grown into one of the region’s emerging inter-island shipping operators. Today, under the leadership of President and Chief Executive Officer Kyle Alexander Aznar, the company is blending heritage with innovation through fleet modernization, professional management, and strategic expansion initiatives. Aznar was then awarded as Young Entrepreneur of the Year by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the Grand Chamber Awards in 2025. The company’s story traces back to the early 1990s when the Aznar family entered the shipping business by converting former mining barges into ferry vessels to address the increasing demand for inter-island transportation in Cebu and nearby provinces. That entrepreneurial spirit laid the foundation for a business that continues to serve as a vital link for communities and industries across the Visayas. Speaking to the journalists in an intimate media briefing, Aznar shared a brief background about their family shipping business. “Shipping has always been part of our family’s history and commitment to nation-building,” Aznar said. “Our goal is to build on that legacy while ensuring the company remains competitive and prepared for future growth. ”Today, Aznar Shipping operates routes connecting Cebu, Leyte, Negros, and Bantayan Island, transporting both passengers and essential cargo. The company has invested heavily in fleet renewal, acquiring three brand-new vessels since 2022 and planning to add at least three more ships over the next five years. These investments are already translating into stronger business performance. Aznar Shipping posted revenues of ₱225 million and net income of ₱51. 78 million in 2025. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, revenues climbed nearly 80 percent year-on-year to ₱81 million, while earnings more than doubled compared to the same period last year. Cargo operations account for roughly 70 percent of the company’s business, carrying commodities such as sugar, fuel, cement, agricultural products, and consumer goods throughout the region. The deployment of larger and more fuel-efficient vessels has enabled the company to significantly increase cargo capacity while improving operational efficiency. Beyond fleet expansion, Aznar Shipping has also embraced professional corporate governance, establishing a board that includes independent directors and non-family members. The move reflects the company’s commitment to institutionalizing management practices while preserving the values and vision that have guided the family business for decades. With the Visayas continuing to post strong economic and population growth, Aznar believes the region offers significant opportunities for shipping and logistics providers. For Aznar Shipping, the next chapter is not only about growth—it is about carrying forward a family legacy that has helped connect islands, support commerce, and contribute to regional development for more than three decades.
