Brian Hook: 'We cannot allow China to win' - VIDEO | News. az

Former U. S. Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook warned that the United States faces an intensifying artificial intelligence race with China, arguing that Beijing views AI as a strategic national security asset and that Washington cannot afford to lose its technological edge. Hook shifted from discussing Iran to growing U. S. -China competition after being asked about China's newly unveiled Kimi K3 artificial intelligence model,News. Azreports. "There is now an AI arms race, andChinadoesn't view AI as a technology. They view it no differently than they do their military," Hook said. "They know that whoever wins the AI arms race is likely to be the dominant power economically, militarily, and technologically," Hook said. The comments came amid growing debate in Washington over whether stricter regulation of artificial intelligence could slow U. S. innovation while China continues investing heavily in the technology. Hook argued that China's approach differs fundamentally from that of the United States because the Chinese government provides extensive state support for domestic AI companies. "China subsidizes their companies. They give them very strong financing. They back a lot of these companies with industrial policy. The United States doesn't do that," he said. Despite those advantages, Hook said he believes American firms remain highly competitive but warned against complacency. "Even so, we still always out-compete China, but we have to be very careful about this AI arms race. We cannot allow China to win," he said. Hook also expressed concern about reports that Chinese AI models could be distributed as open-source software, allowing companies to integrate the technology freely into their own systems. "It would be like having Microsoft Outlook. You don't buy the product. You get the code, and then you put that in your system, and China would be giving that away," he said. "Once the Chinese put their technology in your system, they are in it for good. "The interview comes as competition between Washington and Beijing over artificial intelligence has become a central issue in U. S. national security policy, with officials increasingly viewing AI leadership as critical to future economic growth and military capabilities. News. AzBy Aysel Mammadzada
