Business. Scoop » Alliance Slams Unsolicited Tōnui Bid, Backs Unions To Keep Lyttelton Port 100% Public

Press Release – New Zealand Alliance PartyAlliance Banks Peninsula Candidate and Transport spokesperson Kyle Turnbull says the people who know best how to do and manage work are often the people doing it. The Alliance Party has restated its support for workers at Lyttelton Port Company (LPC) and their unions in opposition to the new unsolicited Tōnui proposal to lease operations of Lyttelton Port to a conglomerate of DP World and local Rūnanga. Alliance Banks Peninsula Candidate and Transport spokesperson Kyle Turnbull says the people who know best how to do and manage work are often the people doing it. He says major port unions representing the Lyttelton Port workforce are clear that bringing DP World here is a grave mistake, and the Alliance agrees. “The port is owned and operated by public hands. It is profitable, provides good jobs, and allows the people of Christchurch to maintain control of their critical infrastructure. ”Mr Turnbull says bringing in international terminal operators like DP World will result in profit flowing out of New Zealand. “It destabilises our national port industry and moves us even further away from a desperately needed national port strategy. ”Mr Turnbull says successive Governments have allowed New Zealand flagged coastal shipping to decline to the point of extinction. “We are one of the most remote sea trading nations in the world, and we need the Alliance plan to rebuild coastal shipping and enact a national strategy that gets our public owned ports working together. ”“DP World is well known for union-busting, poor employment practices, accelerating automation and redundancy, and poor corporate ethics. These are not the people anyone in New Zealand should be seeking to go into business with. ”Mr Turnbull says the Alliance stand firmly behind the Maritime Union of New Zealand and the Rail and Maritime Transport Union, and all their members at LPC, and demand the Christchurch City Council to reject this takeover bid. “Lyttelton Port is already owned by the people. The people of Christchurch are proud of that fact. Let’s keep it that way. ”Content Sourced fromscoop. co. nzOriginal url
