July 07, 2026A 10-kilometre detour will be in place for southbound Carterton traffic while the state highway goes through a major rebuild. The roadworks, set to begin at the end of August and finished in time for the district’s annual Daffodil Festival in mid-September, would take place in the area of Andersons Line. The rebuild would give a fresh start to the section of highway currently prone to deterioration and comes just two years after road rehabilitation work was done in the same area. A southbound detour would be in place via Somerset Rd, Carters Line, and Park Rd. Northbound traffic would be able to travel through at a temporary speed limit with altered lane layout. The project was part of an extensive programme of works by the New Zealand Transport Agency’s (NZTA) Wellington Transport Alliance to rebuild sections of Wairarapa’s highway from the base up, meaning the road would need less maintenance and fewer repairs in the future. In a recent presentation to Carterton District Council, NZTA regional relationship director Emma Speight said the works would be “disruptive”, but crews would work as quickly as they could. She said impacted residents and businesses would be contacted directly prior to and throughout road rebuild works and that emergency access through the work site would be available at all times. This included emergency access to South Wairarapa Vets in Clareville, which sat in the middle of the planned works. “If someone turns up and says they have an animal in their car that they need to get to the vet for an emergency, the team will make sure there is a safe way for the vehicle to go through the work site,” Speight said. Properties affected by the closure included 3222-3240 High St North. NZTA was also working on access for Andersons Line residents as it was a dead-end road and the intersection would be rebuilt during these works. A powerpoint presentation to the council said Wairarapa ground conditions were soft with shallow utility services and many roads required more extensive rebuilding. These rebuilds would last 25 years, with resurfacing required every 10 years. In a road rebuild, crews excavated deep into the road and reconstructed it using structural asphalt before applying the final road resurface. After the works near Andersons Line, a stretch of highway between Brooklyn Rd and Rexwood St would be rebuilt over a four week period in late September. A stretch of highway near Pembroke St was also planned for a rebuild but the timing was yet to be confirmed and would be based around the council’s programme of works. -LDR is local body journalism funded by RNZ and NZ on AirContent Sourced fromscoop. co. nzOriginal url
