Press Release – NZXGlobally, govts are focused on reducing the cost of capital & supporting capital formation. NZX welcomes the NZ Govt carrying out this consultation to remove barriers & costs for listed companies & those looking to list, says Mr Graham Law. 14 July 2026 – New Zealand market operator NZX today welcomed the Government’s phase two capital market reforms consultation, saying the proposals would help lower the cost of raising capital, make public markets more attractive and support economic growth. “As the operator of New Zealand’s public markets, NZX sees first-hand the challenges and opportunities facing New Zealand businesses seeking growth capital,” NZX Acting Chief Executive Graham Law says. “As a small economy competing globally for investment, improving market depth, liquidity and policy settings are critical to ensuring capital is available, affordable and accessible. “Access to capital underpins economic growth. It enables businesses to invest, innovate, expand and create jobs. The cost and availability of capital directly influence New Zealand’s ability to compete internationally and improve living standards. “Phase One of the Government’s capital market reforms delivered important changes, including removing mandatory prospective financial information, providing for FMA class exemptions for green, social and sustainability-linked bonds, and adjustments to climate-related disclosure requirements for listed issuers. “Phase Two continues this momentum with NZX specifically supporting the proposed changes to product disclosure statements, director and issuer liabilities attached to disclosure, auditor liability settings, and broker activity and visibility of offers. “Globally, governments are focused on reducing the cost of capital and supporting capital formation. NZX welcomes the New Zealand Government carrying out this consultation to remove barriers and costs for listed companies and those looking to list. ”Mr Law says the 2026 OECD economic survey on New Zealand reinforces the need for coordinated action between the Government, regulators, financial institutions and market participants to strengthen New Zealand’s capital markets. “Alongside the Government, NZX is focused on working with all participants to deliver a broader product range and new markets to support greater trading activity, adjusting market settings to better meet the needs of issuers and investors, and ongoing modernisation of our market technology to remain aligned with global best practice,” Mr Law says. “The OECD report also highlights tax relief for initial public offerings as one option to encourage more companies to access public markets. NZX continues to advocate for measures that remove distortions, strengthen capital formation and support economic growth. “Public markets matter because they help connect New Zealand savings with New Zealand businesses. This is increasingly important as the pool of KiwiSaver funds expands over the next 20 years. Stronger, more liquid capital markets lower the cost of capital, attract investment and give businesses more options to grow. If New Zealand wants higher productivity, stronger wages and a larger economy, we need settings that encourage capital to be invested here. ”Content Sourced fromscoop. co. nzOriginal url
