Press Release – Motor Industry AssociationGrowth was supported by stronger passenger vehicle demand (up 21. 0 percent) and an increase in heavy commercial registrations (up 23. 0 percent), while light commercial registrations eased from the same month last year (down 7. 1 percent). Market OverviewNew Zealand’s new vehicle market continued to grow in June, with registrations up 13. 5 percent year on year to 13,438 vehicles. Growth was supported by stronger passenger vehicle demand (up 21. 0 percent) and an increase in heavy commercial registrations (up 23. 0 percent), while light commercial registrations eased from the same month last year (down 7. 1 percent). The positive June result contributed to a solid first half of the year, with year-to-date registrations reaching 71,388 vehicles, an increase of 12. 5 percent compared with the first six months of 2025. MIA Chief Executive Aimee Wiley said June’s positive result has further reinforced two key trends that have been developing through the year. “Firstly, the market has strengthened each month despite challenging economic conditions, led by passenger vehicles and supported by gains in light and heavy commercial segments. ”“And secondly, plug in vehicles have continued to command a greater share of the market as the year progresses – against a backdrop of fuel supply concerns and increased model availability. ”Economic ContextWhilst fuel supply conditions have eased slightly in recent weeks, recently published economic indicators point to continued pressure for both households and businesses. Strong battery electric and plug-in hybrid registrations suggest operating costs and fuel price volatility remain top of mind for purchasers. Motive Power TrendsElectrified vehicles continued their strong performance, with a noticeable shift since March when fuel prices began to increase. A total of 2,738 battery electric and 1,402 plug in hybrid vehicles were registered in June, compared to 1,072 and 911 respectively in June 2025. As in previous months, the shift is more pronounced in the passenger vehicle segment, with battery electric and plug in hybrid vehicles representing 38% of registrations – or more than one in every three vehicles registered. The last time this level was achieved was in late 2023 with the impending removal of the Clean Car Discount. On a year-to-date basis, within the passenger vehicle segment, electrified vehicles have accounted for 19. 7 percent of registrations, compared with 9. 2 percent in the same period of 2025. A significant proportion of the growth within the battery electric passenger vehicle segment has come from private buyers. Whilst it cannot be verified by the data available, it is likely that a some of June’s registrations are a result of purchase agreements signed earlier during the fuel supply crisis. SummaryThe new vehicle market continued to strengthen in June, with both monthly and year-to-date registrations exceeding the corresponding results from 2025. Passenger vehicles remained the principal driver of industry growth, while commercial vehicle segments displayed more varied performance. Electrified vehicles continue to feature prominently.
