Carnival Corporation raises GHG intensity reduction target to 25% by 2029

The move follows confirmation that Carnival Corporation reached its original 2030 goal five years ahead of schedule, having cut GHG emissions intensity by 20% in 2025. The figures were published in the company's newly released 2025 Sustainability Report. Since 2008, the company says its GHG emissions intensity has fallen by 44%, roughly halving the emissions associated with each guest sailing over nearly two decades. CEO Josh Weinstein said the early achievement of the 2030 goal reflected "years of disciplined investment, innovation and operational focus" across the fleet, but described the milestone as a starting point rather than an end goal for further improvement. The efficiency drive is also delivering financial returns, with fuel-efficiency gains expected to save the company around USD 650 million in 2026 alone compared with 2019 levels. Fleet efficiency and fuel-saving technologyCarnival Corporation's decarbonisation strategy combines operational improvements with investment in low-GHG power generation. On the operational side, the company points to smart itinerary planning, voyage optimisation and weather routing, alongside technologies such as Power Saver Packs, now fitted on around eighty per cent of its ships, and waste heat recovery systems. Air Lubrication Systems, installed on 13 ships, are said to cut propulsion energy needs by around five per cent, while Azipod propulsion, fitted across more than 40 ships, can reduce fuel use by up to 10 per cent. Seven new ships due to enter the fleet through 2033 are expected to be more than 20% more efficient per passenger than current tonnage. Low-GHG power generationOn the fuel side, the company operates eleven LNG-powered ships, representing around twenty-one per cent of fleet capacity, with seven more on order through 2033. Shore power capability now covers seventy-four per cent of the fleet, used during roughly 1,460 port calls in 2025, with a target of eighty per cent fleetwide connection capability by 2030. Carnival Corporation is also expanding biofuel use and operates a 10 MWh battery energy storage system aboardAIDAPRIMA, fitted in 2022 following an earlier 2020 installation aboard sister shipAIDAPERLA, described as the largest such installation in the cruise industry. The company operates AIDA Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, Cunard, Holland America Line, P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises and Seabourn, and trades on the NYSE under the ticker CCL. © Shippax
