China Coast Guard accuses Philippines of ramming patrol boat near Ren’ai Jiao

20th July 2026 – (Beijing) China’s coastguard has called on the Philippines to halt what it described as infringements, provocations and unfounded publicity after an incident near Ren’ai Jiao on Monday. The China Coast Guard (CCG) said Philippine personnel from an illegally grounded vessel aggressively approached a smaller Chinese patrol boat and caused a collision during a routine patrol. According to a CCG statement, the encounter occurred at about 9am when two rubber craft launched from the Philippine ship LT‑57 closed in at speed and rammed the Chinese vessel despite repeated warnings. The agency alleged that Chinese law enforcement officers were also struck with oars, poles and similar implements. The CCG said it responded with verbal cautions, ship handling measures and what it termed reciprocal counteractions to stabilise the scene, asserting that its officers exercised maximum restraint and acted under relevant laws and regulations. After the event, the Philippine side was accused by the CCG of reversing right and wrong through public statements that, it claimed, misrepresented the facts. Beijing’s maritime service stated it would continue rights‑protection and law‑enforcement patrols in the Nansha Qundao, including the waters around Ren’ai Jiao, and vowed to safeguard China’s claimed territorial sovereignty and maritime interests.
