Father and Son Turn Family Ties Into New Glass VentureAfter several decades serving in various leadership roles in the glass industry, Gus Trupiano is embarking on a new chapter. The former national sales manager for General Glass International’s (GGI) specialty glass division started a new venture with his son, Stephen Trupiano. The duo launched All Things Glass LLC in early June. The company is an independent manufacturer’s representative and sales agency specializing in the architectural and specialty glass industry. It was created to act as a “translation layer” for the glass sector, turning unclear scopes into precise orders, protecting lead times and profit margins. For Gus, the move comes at a time when peers would lean into retirement; however, he wasn’t ready for that. “I reached retirement age, but I wasn’t ready to hang it up,” he says. “I still enjoy the industry, the customers and the friendships I’ve built over the years. Stephen was also at a point where he was looking to transition into a new career opportunity, and we had talked several times over the years about the possibility of building something of our own together. The timing just felt right for both of us. ”Stephen enters the glass industry from a different field (IT), a different industry (entertainment) and a different generation. While the glass business has its complexities, Gus says Stephen’s background in software, operations, project management and customer success positions him well to navigate them. Gus explains that those skills give him a strong understanding of systems, follow-through and communication, a necessity in the world of representation. “And with my experience rooted in the glass industry, relationships, products and understanding customers’ needs, Stephen’s strengths complement mine well and help us approach the business in a more modern and organized way,” adds Gus. The leap from middle management and IT roles to co-founders was always going to challenge Gus and Stephen, but how would the father-and-son duo adapt to becoming co-owners? Gus admits the arrangement has been an adjustment, but in a positive way. It’s been enlightening to watch Stephen take charge, he explains, and look at traditional glass industry solutions with a new set of eyes. “Watching Stephen take ownership of so many parts of the launch has made me very proud,” says Gus. “He has put in a lot of time and effort to help prepare All Things Glass the right way, especially on the systems, website and organizational side of the business. Seeing his work ethic and his desire to do what is required to give this company the best chance for success has been very rewarding for me as his father. ”The father-son team is still figuring out the ins and outs of All Things Glass. The firm currently represents a handful of companies: Aria Vetri, GGI, Interstate Panels Company, Lattuada North America and Mappi International. Gus says they are softly promoting the business and are selective about the companies they want to represent. He states they want to associate with firms that boast a strong product line, with a focus on quality and consistency. All Things Glass’ success comes down to working with people who stand behind their products, explains Gus. BrieflyTrulite Glass & Aluminum Servicesshuttered a facility in Ijamsville, Maryland, on June 19, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice filed by the company. The notice indicates that 21 employees were impacted in what the company notes as a plant closure. To view the laid-in version of this issue in our digital edition,CLICK HERE.
