WASHINGTON (TNND) — Markets Tuesday remained optimistic thatnegotiationsbetween the United States and Iran will result in a permanent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a trade route used to move one-fifth of the world’s oil. Markets Tuesday remained optimistic that negotiations between the United States and Iran will result in a permanent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a trade route used to move one-fifth of the world’s oil. (TNND)The national average gasoline price was $3. 92 Tuesday, less than a cent lower than Monday, according to AAA. Brent crude, the international benchmark for oil prices, hovered around $77 per barrel, about $2 lower than the week’s opening price. “Markets have already been anticipating that a deal would happen. Now that it’s in the works, markets are focused on inventories that may start to go up,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. Iranian oil exports got a boost Monday when the Trump administration announced 60-day waivers for Iranian oil sanctions. Iranian state media said this move “meets Iran’s demands” andpaves the way for talks. Traffic in the strait has picked up in recent days, according to data from analytics firm Kpler. Between Friday and Sunday, there were 93 crossings. Kpler cited the sanction waivers as an “important enabler” of the rebound in traffic volume, which is still just a fraction of the pre-war norm of 120 to 130 daily crossings. Insurance providers for shipping firms are the top decision makers in whether the strait is safe enough for crews to cross. Comments by Energy Secretary Chris Wright during an interview Sunday offered a glimpse into the factors at play. “There’s three channels through the straits. There’s the middle navigation channel that, unfortunately, the Iranians have mined, so that needs to be demined. Then there’s a separate route up north by the Iranian islands that they’ve tried to force ships through. And then there’s the southern route that the United States military has been escorting ships through for several weeks,” Wright said. Top Iranian negotiator and Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf told state media Tuesday that the strait will never return to pre-war conditions and will be managed byIran. Hours later, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated the White House’s position on this. “No country is allowed to charge tolls or fees on an international waterway; that’s existing international law. That’s the way it is in international waterways all over the world and that’s how we expect it’ll be here,” Rubio said. Tags:Crude OilCrude Oil Priceoil pricePetroleum
