Dambazzau: Charting a strategic diplomatic path for Nigeria in China - Blueprint Newspapers Limited

Spread the word“If you can dream it, you can do it. ”– Walt DisneyLeadership in diplomacy is measured not merely by official engagements but by the ability to translate national aspirations into tangible international partnerships. Since assuming office as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Ambassador Abdul Rahman Dambazzau has demonstrated a forward-looking and results-driven approach aimed at advancing Nigeria’s diplomatic, economic, and strategic interests. Addressing officials of the Nigerian Embassy upon his resumption, Ambassador Dambazzau outlined a clear vision anchored on efficiency, accountability, professionalism, and teamwork. “My mission will be guided by commitment to efficiency, accountability, and stronger coordination in pursuing Nigeria’s diplomatic, economic and strategic objectives with the People’s Republic of China,” he declared, urging embassy staff to embrace excellence, innovation, and collaboration in promoting Nigeria’s national interest. His early diplomatic engagements have reflected this vision. In a strategic meeting with the China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO), one of China’s foremost defence technology companies, the ambassador explored opportunities for strengthening Nigeria-China defence cooperation. The engagement focused on modern defence technologies capable of addressing contemporary security challenges while reinforcing long-standing bilateral relations. Recognising that diplomacy extends beyond government-to-government relations, Ambassador Dambazzau also participated in the quarterly meeting of the Group of African Ambassadors in China (GAAC), a platform comprising representatives of 52 African countries. His participation reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to African solidarity and collaborative engagement in advancing the continent’s shared interests with China. Economic diplomacy has equally featured prominently in his engagements. As Special Guest of Honour at a BRICS Centre event, Ambassador Dambazzau showcased Nigeria’s vast investment opportunities and highlighted the strategic importance of the BRICS diaspora in driving investment, industrialisation, innovation, and sustainable development. He informed participants that Nigeria currently operates over 40 Special Economic Zones under the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), which have attracted more than $66 billion in foreign direct investment alongside over ₦620 billion in domestic investment—an indication of Nigeria’s growing attractiveness as an investment destination. On the multilateral front, Ambassador Dambazzau represented Nigeria at the Fourth Forum on Developing Countries and International Law, held under the theme “International Rule of Law and Global Governance: Vision for Sustaining Peace and Advancing Prosperity. ” His participation underscored Nigeria’s commitment to constructive international engagement and the promotion of global peace, justice, and sustainable development. His diplomatic outreach also extended to receiving Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi and members of a Nigerian delegation attending a climate change conference in China. He encouraged the delegation to maximise opportunities for knowledge exchange and international collaboration in addressing climate resilience, environmental sustainability, food security, and peace-building challenges confronting Nigeria. Further demonstrating his commitment to strengthening Africa-China relations, Ambassador Dambazzau attended a high-level seminar commemorating 70 years of China-Africa-Arab diplomatic relations. He also paid a courtesy visit to the Dean of African Ambassadors in China, Ambassador Martin Mpana, where discussions centred on African unity, integration, and leveraging the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) to deepen mutually beneficial partnerships. Throughout these engagements, Ambassador Dambazzau has consistently projected Nigeria as a responsible and active voice in international affairs while advancing the foreign policy objectives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. As Winston Churchill famously observed, “The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see. ” Ambassador Dambazzau’s consultative and strategic diplomacy reflects an appreciation of experience while charting a progressive course for Nigeria’s future engagement with China and the wider international community. His tenure thus far portrays a diplomat committed to strengthening bilateral relations, expanding economic opportunities, promoting regional cooperation, and positioning Nigeria for greater global relevance. With sustained institutional support and continued strategic engagement, Ambassador Abdul Rahman Dambazzau appears well positioned to deepen Nigeria-China relations and translate diplomatic goodwill into meaningful national development. “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. ” The trajectory of Ambassador Dambazzau’s engagements suggests a determined pursuit of that vision for Nigeria.
