El-Rufai Bail Ruling Delayed Until July 1 - InsideBusiness - Business News in Nigeria

A Federal High Court in Kaduna has postponed its decision on the bail applications ofNasir El-Rufaiand his co-defendant,Jimi Lawal, in an ongoing corruption case. TheFederal High Court Kadunahas fixed1 July 2026to deliver its ruling on the bail requests filed by formerKaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufaiand businessmanJimi Lawal. JusticeHauwa’u Buhariannounced the new date after listening to arguments from both the defence and prosecution teams in the case filed by theIndependent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). El-Rufai, Lawal and five companies are facing an amended11-count chargeinvolving allegations ofabuse of office, financial misconduct and money laundering. The defendants have rejected the accusations and pleaded not guilty before the court. During Wednesday’s proceedings, the defence lawyers informed the court that their bail applications were already pending and urged the judge to consider them. After hearing submissions from both sides, Justice Buhari reserved her decision until the new date. The former governor arrived at the court under tight security as the high-profile legal matter continued. TheEl-Rufai corruption caseis one of two separate matters involving the former governor. Earlier on Wednesday, he appeared before a Kaduna State High Court over another ICPC case linked to alleged abuse of office and money laundering during his administration between2015 and 2023. That separate matter was adjourned until29 June 2026for further proceedings. TheICPC investigationreportedly focused on alleged issues involving public funds management and government contract awards. However, El-Rufai and the other defendants have consistently denied any wrongdoing and maintained their innocence. The upcoming ruling on thebail applicationswill determine whether the defendants will remain in custody or be allowed to continue defending themselves while the trial proceeds.
