As a result, the new facilities will provide the computing power needed to train and develop advanced AI models, giving access to start-ups, businesses, researchers, universities and public organisations. The Gigafactories will combine advancedAI processors, cloud technology, high-speed networks and energy-efficientdata centresand will work alongside. They will work alongside Europe’s existing network of 19 AI Factories to improve the EU’s technological independence and support AI development within European rules on data protection, safety and ethics. The programme will be delivered in two phases. The first phase will support up to four projects with as much as €500 million in EU funding each. Additionally, a second group of up to three larger projects could receive up to €1 billion each in EU funding across both phases. Currently 18 EU member states have already signed a joint procurement agreement with the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), which will oversee the evaluation process. To support construction, the European Commission has also signed letters of intent with US hardware companies AMD, NVIDIA and Qualcomm to help ensure successful applicants have access to the advanced processors needed for the projects. Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, said: “The opening of the AI Gigafactories call represents a milestone in our AI Continent ambitions. “Access to the raw scale of computing power within AI Gigafactories is a strategic necessity for Europe as AI development accelerates. I am pleased to see Member States, industry and the Commission coming together to work on these facilities that are key to our technological sovereignty. ”IN RELATED NEWSHow are telcos keeping wildfire-hit Europe connected?European governments back US-led call for 6G leadership and securityEutelsat, SES secure $6. 1bn for clearing US satellite spectrum
