Fayose Warned Against Dragging Olubadan Into Politics

The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) has criticised former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose over his recent comments involving the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja. The group warned the former governor against bringing the traditional institution into political disagreements, saying such remarks could create tension and affect the respected position of the monarch. In a statement signed by the council’s Publicity Secretary, Kola Olomide, CCII described Fayose’s comments as “highly provocative and unreasonable,” adding that they could damage the image of the Olubadan stool. The council said it had previously advised Fayose to avoid linking the traditional institution with political issues but expressed disappointment that the warning was not followed. CCII President-General, Chief Ajeniyi Ajewole, said Fayose’s recent interview on Channels Television’sPolitics Todaywas concerning. During the programme, Fayose accused Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of taking control of the South-West structure of the Peoples Democratic Party and pushing him aside politically. Fayose had also claimed to have the backing of important figures in Ibadan, which the council said appeared to involve the Olubadan institution in political matters. Ajewole stressed that the Olubadan remains a father figure to every Ibadan indigene, regardless of political differences. “The comments credited to former Governor Ayodele Fayose are highly provocative and unreasonable. They are capable of creating a wrong impression about the revered Olubadan institution and unnecessarily heating up the political atmosphere,” he said. He further stated that politicians should not attach the monarch’s name to political struggles or use the traditional stool for personal advantage. “The Olubadan of Ibadanland is the father of all sons and daughters of Ibadan, irrespective of political affiliation. It is completely unacceptable for anyone to drag the revered monarch into political contests,” he added. The CCII leader advised Fayose to handle his political disagreements without involving the Olubadan throne. Ajewole warned that turning the traditional institution into a political tool could weaken its role as a symbol of peace and unity in Ibadan. “Ibadan is known for peace, wisdom and unity. No individual, regardless of political influence, can set Ibadan on fire through reckless political statements,” he said. He also urged Fayose to remember the Yoruba values of respect and good character, adding that CCII would continue to defend the dignity and neutrality of the Olubadan institution.
