According to a South China Morning Post (SCMP) report, the latest visuals point to continued changes in the aircraft’s design, suggesting the programme is moving quickly through its flight-testing phase. Although Beijing has not confirmed the authenticity of the images, defence analysts say the aircraft appears different from previously seen versions, indicating that engineers are still refining its design. Analysts believe these modifications show that Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) is evaluating different configurations before finalising the design. The J-36 first came into the spotlight in late 2024 when images of an unidentified tailless aircraft surfaced online. Since then, multiple versions of the aircraft have reportedly been spotted during test flights. Experts See Signs Of Rapid DevelopmentChina military aviation analyst Andreas Rupprecht told SCMP that the visible differences between the aircraft seen over the past two years suggest more than one prototype is involved. He said the programme appears to be advancing faster than previous Chinese fighter projects, with several aircraft likely being used to test different technologies simultaneously. However, he cautioned that it is still too early to conclude exactly why the changes are being made, as Beijing has not released technical details about the programme. Aircraft Could Play A Wider Battlefield RoleAccording to Rupprecht, the J-36 is unlikely to serve only as a conventional stealth fighter. Instead, it could be designed to coordinate other aircraft during combat while carrying advanced sensors and long-range weapons, allowing it to manage operations over a larger area. He also noted that comparisons with the US Air Force’s Boeing F-47 may be premature because the two aircraft could have different operational roles. Long-Range Operations May Shape The DesignThe aircraft’s large size has prompted speculation about its intended missions. As cited by SCMP, air power expert Justin Bronk believes the design may be aimed at long-range operations in the Indo-Pacific, where greater fuel capacity, larger internal weapons bays and more powerful onboard systems would offer operational advantages. While the programme appears to be progressing rapidly, analysts say it remains unclear when the J-36 will enter operational service, with further testing expected before any formal induction into the Chinese air force.
