Gaza: Board Of Peace Calls For De-escalation, Israeli Official Says IDF Won’t Retreat From The Current Line - EUROPE SAYS

Board of Peace Director-General Nikolay Mladenov met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday and urged Israel to halt its military strikes in the Gaza Strip. Mladenov, accompanied by Board of Peace adviser Aryeh Lightstone, told Netanyahu that Israel should stop its operations in Gaza in line with commitments made under US President Trump’s 20-point peace plan. i24NEWS learned that during the meeting, Mladenov specifically asked Netanyahu to stop the attacks so that the “14-day ceasefire” intended to kick-start the demilitarization process could begin. An Israeli official rejected any suggestion that Israel would change its military posture. “Israel will not retreat from the current line in the Gaza Strip and will continue to thwart any threat to our citizens and soldiers,” the official said. Earlier Monday, Mladenov expressed concern over the humanitarian impact of Israel’s latest operations, saying that two days of strikes across Gaza had killed civilians and destroyed medical supplies that residents rely on. Trump’s Gaza plan in doubt: Board of Peace urges de-escalation after new IDF strikesMladenov said the escalation followed intensive efforts by the Board of Peace and regional mediators, including Egypt, Türkiye, Qatar, and the United States, to secure Palestinian factions’ agreement to a roadmap for implementing President Trump’s plan. The proposal includes transferring civilian governance in Gaza and the decommissioning of armed groups’ weapons. He added that both Israel and the Palestinian side have obligations under the Comprehensive Plan and the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement, emphasizing that his team is continuing to work with the parties and regional partners to de-escalate tensions and create conditions for the plan’s full implementation. “Achieving a lasting peace is hard but achievable if everyone makes their best efforts,” Mladenov said.
