The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says a Ghanaian national evacuated from South Africa died shortly after arriving at Accra International Airport. The passenger was among 50 Ghanaians who arrived in Ghana on an Air Tanzania flight at 5:50 p. m. on Friday, 14 August 2026, as part of a government-organised repatriation exercise. According to the Ministry, the passenger’s condition began to deteriorate about 30 minutes before the aircraft landed in Accra. A medical emergency team based at the airport attended to the passenger immediately after the flight arrived and attempted to stabilise the condition. However, those efforts were unsuccessful. Doctors later confirmed the passenger’s death at 6:55 p. m. , the Ministry said. In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry said it was completing the necessary formalities to notify the deceased’s family. The remains have been taken to the Police Hospital, where an autopsy is expected to be carried out. The Ministry said it would release further information about the circumstances surrounding the death after formally engaging with the bereaved family. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed. The passenger was part of an evacuation arranged by the Ghanaian government to bring Ghanaians back from South Africa. The Ministry’s statement did not explain what circumstances led to the evacuation or provide details about the passenger’s health before the flight. The statement also did not say whether the passenger had been receiving medical care before boarding the Air Tanzania aircraft. Officials at Accra International Airport responded when the passenger’s condition worsened before landing, with the emergency team continuing efforts after the aircraft touched down. The death was confirmed less than an hour after the flight’s arrival. The passenger had reached Ghana with the other evacuees at 5:50 p. m. , while the death was confirmed at 6:55 p. m. The Ministry has not provided any further details while the formal process of informing the family and carrying out the autopsy continues. Further information is expected after officials have spoken to the bereaved relatives.
