A Ghanaian evacuee from South Africa has died shortly after arriving at Accra International Airport, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced. The passenger was among 50 Ghanaians who landed in Ghana on Friday evening, 14 August 2026, on an Air Tanzania flight from South Africa. The aircraft touched down at 5:50pm, with a medical emergency team waiting at the airport to receive the returning evacuees. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the deceased was taken to the Emergency Medical Reception at Accra International Airport after becoming seriously unwell. Doctors later confirmed the passenger’s death at 6:55pm, around an hour after the flight arrived. “Ministry of Foreign Affairs announces with deep sadness the death of one of the Ghanaian evacuees from South Africa upon arrival in Ghana at the Emergency Medical Reception at the Accra International Airport at 6:55pm on Friday, 14th August, 2026,” a statement issued by the ministry said. Information provided by some passengers indicated that the evacuee’s condition had begun to deteriorate approximately 30 minutes before the aircraft landed in Accra. The airport’s medical emergency team attended to the passenger immediately after arrival. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said efforts to save the evacuee were unsuccessful. “Regrettably the deceased passed away and was confirmed dead by doctors at 6:55pm after all attempts failed,” the statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed in the ministry’s announcement. Officials said they were carrying out the formalities required to inform the person’s family. The death occurred as the group of 50 Ghanaian evacuees returned from South Africa on Friday evening. The ministry’s statement did not provide further details about the circumstances that led to the evacuation, or about the medical condition of the deceased before the flight. It confirmed that the passenger’s health worsened during the journey and that emergency medical assistance was provided as soon as the aircraft arrived at Accra International Airport. Doctors at the airport subsequently pronounced the evacuee dead at 6:55pm. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said its immediate priority was to notify the family through the appropriate formal process. No further information about arrangements following the death was included in the statement.
