Good Thing Climate Change is a Hoax, Right? Right?

cbr17bingoRefugeI kept seeing this title and I was intrigued. Is this some sort of seacoast bodice ripper? Well, no, actually. But why yes it was great, and all bodices remained intact. The setting is based off of an actual place, Macquarie Island, located about half way between Tasmania and Antarctica. It is the location of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, with a treasure chest of seeds collected world-wide for . . . just in case. It’s only inhabited by a scientific team, and is a designated wildlife refuge site for a large population of sea lions, penguins, albatrosses, etc. This version, however, takes place in a world where global warming is more advanced than it is now. Seas are rising, and drastic wildfires are changing the landscape. Our protagonist, Rowan, has just escaped from her home and wildlife sanctuary in Tasmania as it was being utterly obliterated by a raging wildfire. Her husband, an American, is a researcher and scientist on this fictitious version of Macquarie Island, here called Shearwater, and they have been corresponding via e-mail, but his last few messages have been problematic, and now outside contact with the island has been cut off. She manages to hire some guy in a small boat to take her there, but they are shipwrecked off the island and she is grievously injured. She is rescued by the de facto caretaker of the island, Dominic Salt, and his two teenage children and young son. Seems that they are in the process of turning off all the lights, so to speak, and in a few weeks, the contact ship will arrive to take them off island, since the seas are rising rapidly, and there soon will be no island. But the scientists are not to be found, although there is evidence they left in a hurry, and there seems to be some information the Salt family is keeping to themselves. This was definitely a page turner, and a rather scary look at our possible future.
