Google Play Launches $1 Million Fund for Africa's Independent Game Developers

Google Play has launched a$1 million fundto support independent game studios across 32 sub-Saharan African countries. Ten studios will receivenon-dilutive fundingof between$50,000 and $200,000, along with mentorship and technical support. The initiative comes as Africa's video game industry continues to expand but many developers still struggle to secure funding. Africa's video game industry has gained a new source of funding. Google Play announced on Friday, July 3, the launch of its firstIndie Games Fund Africa, a $1 million initiative designed to support 10 independent game studios across 32 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The program aims to help developers grow their businesses, improve their games, and reach new markets. "The launch of this fund in Africa reflects our commitment to unlocking the tremendous talent of local studios by providing the resources they need to grow their businesses, refine their creative vision, and share uniquely African stories with players around the world," said Ben McOwen Wilson, Managing Director of Google Play for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Each selected studio will receive non-dilutive funding ranging from $50,000 to $200,000. Through the initiative, Google hopes to address one of the biggest challenges facing African game developers: access to the capital needed to turn promising projects into sustainable businesses. In addition to financial support, participating studios will receive personalized mentoring from Google Play experts, including technical guidance to improve game performance and advice on increasing visibility on the platform. The initiative comes as Africa's video game industry continues to gain momentum despite limited access to financing. According to SpielFabrique and Xsolla, the sector generated more than $2. 29 billion in revenue in 2025, driven largely by the rapid growth of mobile gaming. The market is expected to expand further in the coming years. Mordor Intelligence projects that Africa's gaming industry could exceed $4. 10 billion by 2031. Despite that growth outlook, many independent studios still struggle to raise the capital needed to develop new titles and scale their businesses. Applications for the Google Play Indie Games Fund Africa are open until July 31. The program is open to privately owned studios with 50 employees or fewer that are registered in one of the 32 eligible African countries and have already released at least one game on mobile, PC, or console. Applicants must also commit to publishing their games on Google Play and participating, on a non-exclusive basis, in the Google Play Pass program for two years. The 10 selected studios will be announced in September. Samira Njoya
