Acting head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) Leonard Lekgetho says government must intervene in procurement to ensure that large scale fraud and corruption, like that at theTembisa Hospital, does not happen again. He says with the amount of resources spent at Tembisa Hospital, it should be a state-of-the-art health facility. Lekgetho was a speaker at the 25thannual Board of Healthcare Funders Conference in Cape Town, addressing the four-day conference on fraud, waste and abuse in the health sector. Legketho says the SIU has 33 proclamations to investigate fraud and corruption in the health sector, of which 25 are complete. Six investigations, among them the Tembisa Hospital, are still active. He says ongoing investigations indicate that changes need to be made to ensure corruption and mismanagement are prevented. “We really need to regulate some of the things. I mean, how do we allow one person to register 75 companies, and all the 75 companies have conducted business with Tembisa, really? I mean we have to do something there…And also the procuring of medical devices – where you see that this procurement of very, very different medical devices and if you see what has been procured and what has been spent, Tembisa should be a very, very high-class hospital in the country. ”
