Josh Hazlewood has identified South Africa as one of three remaining frontiers Australia’s celebrated bowling attack wants to conquer before the end of its time together. Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon have never won a Test series together in South Africa, England or India. Lyon was part of Australia’s victorious tour of South Africa in 2014, but Hazlewood only made his Test debut later that year. According tocricket. com. au, the three countries are providing Hazlewood with added motivation as Australia prepare for a demanding period that could feature as many as 21 Tests. Australia’s last Test tour of South Africa ended in a bitter 3-1 defeat in 2018. Hazlewood claimed 12 wickets during the four-match series, which was overshadowed by the ball-tampering scandal at Newlands. The Australians have not returned for a Test series since, making their next visit a rare opportunity for the ageing attack to complete a significant piece of unfinished business. The 35-year-old has not played in the format for 13 months after hamstring and Achilles injuries disrupted his career. He is also five wickets away from becoming the seventh Australian fast bowler to reach 300 Test scalps. Competition for places has increased during his absence, with Scott Boland taking 20 wickets in Australia’s most recent Ashes campaign. Hazlewood believes Australia will need its full group of fast bowlers to survive the heavy workload ahead. Personal history is within touching distance, but conquering South Africa, India and England with Australia’s Big Four appears to be the greater prize. Australia’s much-vaunted ‘Big Four’ attack of Hazlewood, Cummins, Starc and Nathan Lyon have yet to win a Test series together in India, England or South Africa.
