The president of the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA), Alexandru Bociu, said on Thursday he has no reason to resign, arguing that during his term Romania has regained first place in Europe for sheep and goat exports. "Resign after we've managed to return to #1 in Europe? Resign after achieving this, in a context where public service concession veterinarians had their RON 5,000 payment cut? Resign after reopening these export markets? And I'd like us to look at a comparative example. I took office in November 2021 with 1,600 outbreaks and 80 farms affected by African swine fever. Today we have fewer than 30 outbreaks nationwide and one single farm affected since the beginning of the year. Together with farmers and the industry, we've managed to reopen exports to the U. S. , China, Vietnam on other sectors. I have no reason to step down," Bociu said at a press conference, according to Agerpres. His remarks come amid the protest staged on Thursday by sheep breeders, who demanded Bociu's dismissal. The protesters are calling for the unblocking of sheep exports, full compensation for economic losses, state-funded anthrax vaccination, and accountability - including removal from office - for those they consider responsible for mismanaging the crisis and blocking exports.
