How Doval’s BRICS meetings put China ties and West Asia on India’s security table

Doval’s meetings with Wang Yi and Iran’s deputy NSA put China normalisation, West Asia and emerging security threats on India’s BRICS agenda in New DelhiNew UpdateNSA Ajit Doval meets FM of China, Wang Yi on 22 June 2026 on the sidelines of the BRICS NSAs’ Meeting in New Delhi. New Delhi: National Security Advisor Ajit Doval held separate meetings with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Iran’s Deputy NSA Ghadir Nezamipour in New Delhi, placing India’s China normalisation track and West Asia diplomacy alongside the BRICS security agenda. Doval met Wang on June 22 on the sidelines of the BRICS National Security Advisers’ Meeting. The Ministry of External Affairs said the two sides reviewed recent developments in bilateral relations and noted progress towards gradual normalisation. The China meeting came as India hosted the two-day BRICS NSAs’ meeting under its chairship. Doval told Wang that stable, predictable and constructive India-China ties contribute to trust and better understanding between the two sides, according to the MEA. Doval also met Nezamipour, Deputy Secretary for Defence Affairs at Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. The meeting came before the BRICS NSAs’ meeting and at a time when US-Iran talks in Switzerland are continuing after the West Asia conflict. The MEA said India and Iran reviewed the situation in West Asia, BRICS cooperation and bilateral ties. The BRICS security meeting brings together top security officials from Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the UAE. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian NSA Sergei Shoigu are among the senior officials attending. The stated agenda includes non-traditional security challenges, new technologies in emerging security threats, counter-terrorism cooperation and security in information and communication technologies. The meeting will also review outcomes from BRICS working groups on counter-terrorism and ICT security. India’s chairship gives New Delhi a formal platform to host security conversations with countries that sit on different sides of major geopolitical disputes. The next formal step is the BRICS leaders’ summit in India in September, for which the NSA-level meeting is expected to shape security priorities.
