That’s exactly whatdesigner Carla Bartondid when she teamed up with The Textile Company to produce this Seventies-inspired, Deco-inflected dream. “Fashion and interior designare obviously very connected and, at the moment, chocolate browns, caramels and tans are very in – I’ve been going through a 1970s phase,” says Carla of her inspiration. “I think that filtered into what I gravitated towards when I went to The Textile Company showroom in Sydney. ”Photography: Georgina Egan | Styling: Maria PapantoniouCarla met up with the company’s brand and creative director, Jessica Fitzgibbon, and then it was playtime: “It was so much fun for me to meet Carla in our Alexandria showroom and for her to bring this room to life with our latest collections,” says Jessica. “We started with a few Misia pieces from the new collection, then added pieces by Phillip Jeffries – all from The Textile Company – and built it from there,” explains Carla, who’s been working with The Textile Company since her days as a designer at Thomas Hamel & Associates (she launched her own studio in 2021). “We’ve loved seeing Carla’s business develop and the amazing work she does with our fabric and wallcoverings,” says Jessica. The company’s own fabrics are a particular point of pride: “We were keen to have Carla play with our private label fabrics and use those with our international brands. For our private label, we curate a decorative range of drapery and upholstery fabrics with European mills, specifically for the Australian and NZ aesthetic, stocking a large percentage of the range in our Sydney warehouse. ” Her favourite element in this scheme? “I love the two-tone look of the sofa. ”Photography: Georgina Egan | Styling: Maria PapantoniouThat sofa, Arthur G’s ‘Orb’, has a personal connection, Carla says. “My mum, who passed away last year, was a designer who worked with Arthur G, so this was a nice connection. ” And a spectacular scheme showing what fabrics can do.
