Image: Hockey IndiaIndia’s 2-2 draw against China was a result they can take plenty of encouragement from. They were disciplined for long stretches, defended with purpose and showed enough attacking quality to trouble one of the stronger teams in the pool. But the real value of that result will only emerge if India follow it up against South Africa. On paper, this is a match India should control. South Africa opened their campaign with a 0-4 loss to England, while India showed against China that they can stay competitive against a side with greater experience and quality. That makes the second Pool D game particularly important. India need the three points, but there is also an opportunity to improve their goal difference before the crucial meeting with England. The attacking responsibility will once again fall heavily on Navneet Kaur and Deepika. Both found the net against China and offered India a threat from wide areas. Navneet’s ability to create openings and link attacks can be especially useful against a South African defence that may spend long periods protecting its own circle. Deepika, meanwhile, brings pace, direct running and a serious threat from penalty corners. Captain Salima Tete could also have a bigger role to play. Against China, India did not always find enough control through the centre of the pitch. South Africa may provide her with more opportunities to carry the ball, connect the midfield with the forwards and dictate the rhythm of the game. If India are able to dominate possession, her influence could become an important part of their attacking plan. At the same time, India cannot afford to sacrifice their defensive organisation while pushing forward. The structure they showed against China was one of the positives from the opening game. South Africa may offer fewer attacking problems, but any unnecessary lapses could give them a way back into the contest. India should therefore begin with patience rather than immediately chasing goals. Once they understand how South Africa are setting up, the tempo needs to increase. More sustained pressure, quicker circulation and better finishing could turn this into a comfortable victory. The result against China has kept India firmly in the picture in Pool D. Beating South Africa would strengthen that position. If India can add a convincing margin to the three points, they will head into the England game with greater confidence and a stronger platform.
