India produced their biggest win at the Hockey World Cup so far, beating South Africa 6-1 in a commanding Pool D contest on Tuesday to put themselves in a strong position ahead of their final group match against England. After sharing the spoils with China in their opening game, India needed a convincing performance and they delivered one. The six-goal haul not only secured three valuable points but also gave their goal difference a significant boost with England now waiting in their final pool fixture. India started on the front foot and spent much of the opening period around the South African circle. They were rewarded late in the first quarter when Sakshi Rana’s ball into the danger area was turned into the net by Sunelita Toppo. The goal came while India were temporarily down to 10 players after Ishika Chaudhary received a green card. South Africa had their moments, particularly when they found space down the flanks. Bichu Devi was called into action during the opening quarter and produced an important save, while a South African penalty corner also came to nothing after a poor trap. India then took complete control in the second quarter. Navneet Kaur doubled the advantage with an excellent penalty-corner conversion, sending a powerful effort beyond the goalkeeper and the first line of defence. India continued to apply pressure and added a third before half-time after sustained work inside the South African circle. A loose sequence around the penalty corner eventually created another opening, with India keeping their composure to finish the move. The third quarter belonged almost entirely to India. Deepika added another after a well-worked combination involving Baljeet and Navneet. The forward took the opportunity at the far post and calmly finished to make it 4-0. India then produced one of the best finishes of the evening. Ishika struck the post, but Sakshi Rana reacted quickest to the rebound and sent a reverse-stick effort into the top corner. It was a finish that gave India a five-goal cushion. India were not finished. They kept pressing and eventually moved six ahead, further underlining their dominance. South Africa managed to pull one back in the final quarter after Kayla de Waal got the decisive touch on a deflection. The officials checked the incident before confirming the goal, giving South Africa their first goal of the tournament. It was little more than a consolation as India remained firmly in control. The 6-1 victory is India’s biggest World Cup win margin in the tournament and puts them in a far healthier position in Pool D. With six minutes still remaining, India had already done enough to secure a result that could prove extremely valuable when the group is decided. England will provide a far tougher test next, but India will enter that contest with confidence, attacking momentum and a much-improved goal difference. The draw against China now looks even more valuable. India have followed it with a statement victory and have given themselves a genuine opportunity to push forward in the competition.
