Iran Urges International Rail Organization to Address U. S. Attacks on Railway Infrastructure - WANA

WANA (Jul 10) –Following the recent U. S. attacks on Iran’s railway network, Ali Bahraini, Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, sent a letter to the Secretary General of the Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail (OTIF), calling for the organization to seriously address the matter. In the letter, Bahraini referred to the attack on a railway bridge in Iran’s Golestan Province, stating that it was another example of attacks targeting facilities that serve public transportation, economic activity, and regional connectivity. He added that the incident was not isolated but part of a continuing pattern of attacks against Iran’s railway lines and other civilian transportation infrastructure. The letter stressed that OTIF should, within the framework of its mandate and the principles governing the relevant conventions, pursue the matter with seriousness and take appropriate action through its legal and institutional mechanisms. It further stated that attacks on railway infrastructure not only damage the infrastructure of a member state but also endanger the broader objectives of safety, security, and the reliability of international rail transport. The Iranian representative in Geneva noted that during the recent war, he had previously written to the OTIF Secretary General condemning the U. S. attacks on Iran’s railway network and calling for the organization’s immediate action. According to the letter, OTIF responded by stating that it is updating its legal framework to enable punitive measures against attacks on railway infrastructure and considers any attack on railway lines to be a matter of the utmost seriousness.
