Srinagar, June 30:The Jammu and Kashmir Civil Society Forum (JKCSF) on Tuesday expressed concern over the delay in announcing summer vacations for schools despite the prevailing heatwave, urging the government to take a timely decision in the interest of students' health and safety. In a statement, JKCSF Chairman Abdul Qayoom Wani said it was unfortunate that the government appeared to be waiting for public pressure before acting on an issue that directly affects lakhs of students across Jammu and Kashmir. He said decisions concerning children's welfare should be proactive and guided by scientific and humanitarian considerations rather than public outcry. "The Education and Health Departments are among the most sensitive departments as they directly deal with human life, well-being and the future of society. These departments should remain insulated from political considerations, and decisions affecting students must always prioritise their health and welfare," Wani said. Expressing concern over the prevailing weather conditions, Wani urged the government to immediately review the situation and announce summer vacations if required in the larger public interest. He said protecting children from extreme weather was a collective responsibility and called for governance that reflects sensitivity, foresight and compassion. Reiterating the forum's appeal to keep education beyond politics, Wani urged policymakers to adopt a child-centric approach while taking decisions concerning students, particularly during periods of extreme weather.
