Juneteenth screening of “The Big Sea” at St. John Theatre sparks community health conversations

Published 1:31 pm Wednesday, June 24, 2026More than 100 residents, advocates, educators, healthcare professionals, and community leaders gathered at the historic St. John Theatre on Juneteenth for a screening of “The Big Sea,” a documentary examining industrial pollution, environmental health, and community activism. The event, hosted by Concerned Citizens of St. John, drew attendees from St. John Parish, neighboring River Parishes, the Greater New Orleans area, and Mississippi. Organizers said many attendees came seeking information and discussion about environmental and public health issues affecting their communities. The documentary “The Big Sea” explores the links between the global surfing industry and air pollution in Reserve in St. John Parish, with connections among chloroprene-producing facilities, consumer products, and environmental health concerns. It also follows residents, scientists, advocates, and surfers as it examines how everyday materials can link local communities to broader conversations about public health and environmental responsibility. Following the screening, attendees participated in a community discussion focused on health awareness, education, and civic engagement. “What we witnessed was a community eager to learn more and do more,” said Tish Taylor, program director for Concerned Citizens of St. John. “The turnout demonstrated that residents want opportunities to participate in conversations and decisions that affect their families and future generations. ”Email newsletter signupRobert Taylor Jr. , co-founder and executive director of the organization, said the film highlights the impact informed communities can have. “The BIG SEA reminds us that informed citizens and organized communities can make a difference,” Taylor said. Concerned Citizens of St. John thanked filmmakers, theater staff, volunteers and community partners for helping organize the event.
