Drawing inspiration from globally recognized events such as the Mobile World Congress Barcelona, which generates significant economic benefits and attracts global investors, Tanui emphasized the potential of a similar platform to boost Kenya’s digital economy and international profile. The Kenyan government is exploring plans to establish a major international technology event in Nairobi as part of efforts to position the capital as Africa’s next global technology hub. Principal Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy, John Kipchumba Tanui, announced the initiative following a meeting with senior officials from theGSMA,the global organization representing mobile network operators worldwide. The discussions focused on the possibility of creating a consolidated technology platform that would attract global investors, innovators, policymakers, and technology companies to Kenya. Tanui said the proposal draws inspiration from the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona, one of the world’s largest technology events, which generates billions of euros in economic impact annually while cementing Barcelona’s reputation as a leading global technology destination. The meeting brought together Angela Wamola, GSMA Head of Sub-Saharan Africa, Caroline Mbugua, Director of Public Policy and Communications for Sub-Saharan Africa, and John Giusti, GSMA’s Chief Regulatory Officer. According to Tanui, Kenya’s rapidly expanding digital ecosystem, thriving innovation landscape, and strategic position as a gateway for technology and investment in Africa make Nairobi an ideal location for a globally recognized technology conference. The proposed event would provide a platform for governments, multinational technology firms, investors, development partners, startups, academic institutions, and policymakers to collaborate on innovative solutions to regional and global challenges while unlocking new economic opportunities. The initiative aligns with Kenya’s Digital Superhighway and Creative Economy Agenda championed by President William Ruto’s administration. Government officials believe such a platform could accelerate digital transformation, attract foreign investment, strengthen international partnerships, showcase African innovation, and create employment opportunities for young people across the continent. Tanui emphasized that strategic partnerships with organizations such as GSMA will be crucial in realizing the vision of transforming Nairobi into a leading technology and innovation center for Africa. If successful, the initiative could significantly enhance Kenya’s standing in the global technology sector and further establish Nairobi as a key destination for technology investment, innovation, and business development in Africa.
