Klobuchar lays out health care priorities in Winona

(ABC 6 News) – Amy Klobuchar outlined healthcare priorities in Winona while her campaign and Lisa Demuth’s campaign offered competing views on costs and coverage in Minnesota. Klobuchar said she is focused on protecting Minnesotans from future expenses and fewer healthcare options. Only 10% of Minnesota voters said healthcare was their most important issue, according to a July KSTP/Survey USA poll. Klobuchar said she highlighted the issue because Minnesotans could see changes in the future. “There have been such severe cuts. Some of them have happened, but a bunch are coming down our way,” Klobuchar said. Klobuchar pointed out that Medicaid cuts from President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill, which she said Republican nominee for governor Lisa Demuth supported, would lead to higher prices and more uninsured people. “My priorities are on Minnesota. My priorities are to make sure that Minnesota families can afford to see a doctor and fill a prescription, no matter what their zip code is, no matter what part of the state that they are from,” Klobuchar explained. Demuth’s campaign pushed back in a statement and argued that Klobuchar is the reason healthcare is more expensive for Minnesotans. Klobuchar said she has been fighting for better healthcare since before taking office. She also said she wants more pathways into healthcare careers at all education levels in places like Winona and The Med City. “I’m going to launch the Minnesota health care future and work with our colleges, employers and unions to recruit and train medical professionals,” Amy Klobuchar promised. Demuth’s campaign also pointed to her support for Minnesota’s reinsurance plan. The plan pays part of high-cost medical bills for Minnesotans who buy their own insurance. Both Klobuchar and Demuth have said they support rural hospitals, increased access to health insurance and healthcare, and lower costs for taxpayers. The next key question is whether the higher insurance premiums that insurers have predicted for 2027 will make healthcare a bigger priority for voters before the general election.
