Landry urges Trump to expand U. S. presence in Greenland, outlines five priorities - EUROPE SAYS

The governor says stronger U. S. -Greenland ties would benefit both nations after serving as President Trump’s special envoy. Gov. Jeff Landry is urging President Donald Trump to strengthen the United States’ relationship with Greenland, outlining five priorities he says would increase America’s presence in the Arctic territory following his visit earlier this year. In a post on X, Landry said Trump “is right about Greenland” and claimed residents told him they feel “abandoned by Denmark” during his May trip to the semi-autonomous Danish territory. This story continues below. “A stronger American presence would make both Greenland and the United States stronger,” Landry wrote. Landry said he recommended that Trump pursue five priorities:Establish direct shipping routes between the United States and Greenland. Expand the U. S. diplomatic presence in Greenland. Approve Denmark’s State Partnership Program application with an Arctic and Greenland focus while strengthening the U. S. military presence on the island. Create a U. S. -Greenland Joint Investment Fund. Expand educational, cultural and public diplomacy exchanges between the United States and Greenland. “The time to strengthen the U. S. -Greenland partnership is now!” Landry wrote. Landry’s post drew a community note on X disputing his claim that Greenlanders broadly welcomed a stronger U. S. presence. The note pointed towidespread protestsduring the governor’s May visit. President@RealDonaldTrumpis right. Greenland isn’t important to Denmark. That’s why the Greenlandic people have been neglected for so long. A sustained American presence in Greenland will bring security and prosperity to the people of the United States and Greenland alike!https://t. co/IQlDGRD18n— Jeff Landry (@JeffLandry)July 8, 2026The recommendations come months afterLandry traveled to Greenland as Trump’s special envoyamid the administration’s continued interest in the Arctic territory because of its strategic military location, emerging shipping routes and natural resources. During the trip, Landry defended the administration’s interest in Greenland and argued the territory had largely been overlooked by world leaders before Trump’s renewed focus on the region. Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen met with Landry during the visit and described their discussions as “constructive,” but reiterated that Greenlanders oppose outside control. “We clearly reiterated that the people of Greenland are not for sale and that Greenlanders have the right to self-determination,” Nielsen said at the time. “This is not a subject for negotiation. ”Landry’s visit drew international attention and criticism from some observers, who questioned the diplomatic nature of the trip after the governor traveled to Greenland without an official invitation. Despite the backlash, Landry said he received a warm reception from residents and pledged to continue strengthening ties between the United States and Greenland.
