LETTER: Hard choices needed to save humanity from climate change - Langley Advance Times

Published 3:00 pm Thursday, August 13, 2026By Contributor, Letter to the EditorDear Editor,The world needs to play catch-up. What is the number one cause of climate change? The human activity of the world burning fossil fuels. Coal, oil, and gas are the culprits. Transportation drives carbon dioxide skyward into the air, and we breathe it while it’s on its journey into the atmosphere, which causes global warming. The world’s appetite for oil wants to supply more oil that will end up polluting and poisoning more than ever the world, which will end up causing more problems, causing more global warming and destruction. This should be a concern to everyone, because we will be the real culprits lighting the fires across this world. Every disaster that will happen is and will be our own fault every time we fuel up and delay the inevitable change that is needed. In the world today, it seems to be a lot of energy in pumping, and selling off oil and gas worldwide but not as much effort into greening the planet faster so we are not dependent on fossil fuels. North America has slow wind and solar growth, according to information, is running at a pace that is slower than European countries, and is at the lower end of the G7 climate target. Oil flows in the veins of Canada and other countries throughout the world, which contributes to each economy but at the same time, is it going to be the global demise to our own existence?Black gold, is it possible it will bleed red? That this planet we all live on becomes unliveable?Earth warms under its fossil fuel furnace, and the world idles in neutral waiting for what? A quick fix?Hard choices are needed and are being lit beneath the feet of the world right now. If we stand still, the only thing left will be a puff of smoke. We are no longer killing this world softly; now the atmosphere we live in is visually in front of us, surrounding us with disasters and will continue to do so and accelerate unless we actually do something about it and put our political efforts to the floorboard and drive green energy into the number one priority – it is the real survival mode we are in and technology with industry needs a new governmental revolution to move ahead with a policy that will grasp the minds of every politician; they, the government, are in our hands, by our votes, our petition, our principles, and our survival mode and neutrality is no longer a choice. Canada with the world needs to breathe and be able to stay alive. Next year is a year unknown as every year will be thereafter. So here we are – what’s next?Cran Campbell, Langley City• READ MORE: UBC study shows clearcutting affects flood risk in B. C. • READ MORE: LETTER: Canada needs to produce more oil and gas, not less
