I. is well known for its entertainment and food. The summer is always a beehive of activity with ceilidhs, live concerts, plays and much, much more. The wide variety of things to do and places to go can make one’s head spin. I want to highlight a show that we attended recently at the Watermark Theatre in North Rustico. It is called Sugar Road. Sometimes it is difficult to know whether a show will be enjoyable or not. We thought we would take a chance on this show as it was billed as a romantic comedy with a country twang. Jesse, the country singer, had a magical encounter before being separated by his rise to fame. Twelve years later, he is at the top of his career. Meanwhile, Hannah is keeping the lights on at the family business, and they are about to meet again. Kristen Da Silva’s Sugar Road is filled with quick wit, romance and a little country music about the one that got away and the sweet surprises life delivers when you least expect them. The evening surpassed our expectations. The dialogue gave us cause to laugh out loud and we were not alone. There were many smiles and happy faces. It is definitely a light-hearted love story gone awry. The cast had four characters, Hannah, Caroline, Jesse and Ray. They never missed a beat. As an author, I appreciated how the countless comedy lines intertwined throughout the dialogue. This is a fun-filled and action-packed performance. The play runs until Aug. 29. It is worth the drive to North Rustico!Marlene Bryenton,CharlottetownI really hope that the voters in the Cornwall district are smart and elect Tayte Willows of the Green party. I think it is the only reasonable choice, after all we have had years of Liberals and PC governments. Look at the mess they have created, could the Green Party do any worse? Maybe they can do a better job if we give them the chance. We have endured the backroom boys for too long, the well-established patronage deputies and staff appointees. It’s time for a clean sweep of political appointees, time to hire people who can actually do the job required. Personally I have fought for environmental action at the Norboro junk yard. The only response from these present government appointees are that Norboro have a permit. Point Deroche building and beach blockage — they have a permit. It seems if you get a permit you can do as you like. What about unsightly properties? Have any inspectors visited the old service station in Fredericton? Do we really have a department of the environment, and if so what exactly do they do?These are things that need to be addressed before we can truly consider this a beautiful island. When I arrived here in 1969 it was named the Garden of the Gulf, and it really was beautiful. Since that time I have watched our family farms disappear as corporations gobble them up. I have hedge rows cleared making way for large open fields and giant farm machinery. The poison sprays are used to protect potato crops, while previous Liberal and PC governments did nothing. It seems every law on the Island has dozens of loopholes, yet the PC and Liberal governments did nothing. Well, they convene study groups and committees that cost taxpayers, giving MLAs extra cash, that come to nothing. So maybe giving the Green party a chance to govern the Island might not be a bad idea? I certainly think it’s worth a try. F. Ben Rodgers,Abram-Village, P. E. I. During the playing of O Canada prior to the Canada-Morocco FIFA World Cup knockout game, it was so delightful to see coach Jesse Marsch (American) belting out our Canadian anthem with gusto equal to his players.
