Letters: We’re not moving, but the city needs a plan to cope with climate change

Mayor Helena Moreno’srebuke of the climate studythat beckons our leaders to begin planning a relocation effort is an admirable defense of the city and its residents. If we’ve learned anything about our mayor in the first months of her service, it’s that she’s a fearless leader who’s comfortable standing up for her convictions. Governing with a bold vision and a clear-throated voice is sine qua non in the politics du jour. That’s why I was disappointed that her letter volleyed the work of providing solutions — the “meaningful” part, as she put it — back to the scientists. I’d like to know more about what the climate policy of the Moreno administration looks like in their wildest dreams. I know they may not want to be too boisterous with Shell headquarters moving in down the street, but tell us what’s achievable this year. What plans will be in action by 2030? How can we reverse the trends and make this report look as foolish and shortsighted as they say it is?Strong leadership is what the country needs and it’s been in short supply on the Democratic side of the ticket. Moreno has proven she has what it takes to be a force for good, so I hope the next time science lays out its findings, she thinks about solving the problems presented before she adopts the all-too-common practice of requesting reports that only deliver good news.
