Liberty Networks, a connectivity anddigital infrastructureprovider, has partnered withVenezuela‘s state-run telecommunications provider, Compañía Anónima Nacional Teléfonos de Venezuela (CANTV), to launch theFénix subsea cablesystem. This new infrastructure links Venezuela toCuraçao, providing up to 14 terabits per second (Tbps) of capacity and supporting 100G and 400G interfaces. The Fénix cable spans 378 km and features two landing points: one in Camuri, Venezuela, approximately 50 km from Caracas, and the other in Willemstad, Curaçao. The system integrates with CANTV’s Festoon cable, aiming to significantly improve connectivity and reduce latency within Venezuela, according to a press release. Regional Connectivity and CapacityThe subsea cable connects directly to Liberty Networks’ IP hub in Curaçao. This hub is also linked to the firm’s other subsea cable systems, including Arcos, EC-Link, Jerry Newton, and PCCS, enhancing the availability and resilience of connectivity acrossLatin Americaand the Caribbean. The integration is expected to reduce latency in Curaçao to as low as 4 milliseconds, with onward IP transit from Curaçao routed to the Network Access Point (NAP) of the Americas in Miami, Florida. Ray Collins, Senior Vice President of Infrastructure and Corporate Strategy at Liberty Latin America and CEO of Liberty Networks, stated that this integration allows both entities to offer robust and diversified connectivity, reaffirming their long-term commitment to the Venezuelan market. He highlighted the project as a fundamental step to strengthen international connectivity at a critical time for Venezuela’s digital development. Colmenares M. , CANTV Vice President of Technology and Infrastructure, noted that the initiative represents a significant advancement for the country’s telecommunications infrastructure. The new interconnection point for Caracas is particularly crucial, as the capital concentrates over 40% of Venezuela’s international traffic volume. The Fénix cable is designed to generate substantial capacity to meet the current needs of Venezuela.
